Description
The Allied Seawind Mk 11 Ketch is the bigger sister of the original Allied Seawind that was the first fiberglass boat to circumnavigate. Sturdily built in the early days of fiberglass construction, the hull thickness exceeds that of modern-day construction. The full keel with 5,800 pounds of ballast gives her stiffness and directional stability. The Ketch sail plan allows for different configurations depending on the weather conditions; she will sail quite briskly under jib and mizzen alone in winds of 20-25 k. Also, dividing the sail plan between main and mizzen allows for a more managable mainsail compared to the larger mainsail in a sloop of the same LOA.
The wide bow platform with the stainless steel bow pulpit provides security when setting and retrieving an anchor, and the higher toerails (3 inches) provide additional security while on deck. I have yet to see a beefier hull-deck joint and rubrail on any other sailboat (see pictures above), which removes any anxiety of damaging the hull in the event of kissing a piling while docking.
Under sail, she is quite dry, quite comfortable, and not at all tender. She will hove to very calmly and obediently if you need to make a quick trip belowdecks.
She sails well on all points but is most exhilirating on a close reach.
Down below is a welcoming cabin, spacious and comfortable. There is copious storage throughout the boat, and in two very large cockpit lockers.
Access to the engine is through the bulkhead under the companionway stairs, or from either of the cockpit lockers. Each cockpit locker has a removable wall that allows engine access but prevents the locker contents from slipping into the bilge.
The magazine Practical Sailor may have said it best in their review of the Seawind II in January 2016: "the Seawind II is a cruising sailor's dream machine."
Certainly, with her classic lines, she is a head-turner in any marina or anchorage.
