Description
Launched by the Hinckley Yacht Company in 1976, “Prelude” was the brochure cover boat for several years. She is owned by a seasoned yachtsman and maintained to the 9’s showing nothing less than pride-of-ownership. Her signature Flag Blue Hull, beautifully varnished brite-work, and house will turn heads no matter where she goes.
Prelude will sleep six in two cabins. Forward is the double V-berth with filler and two pilot and two transom berths in the main cabin. There is a head with shower and pressurized hot water. The galley is equipped with a three-burner propane stove with oven and Alber-Barbour refrigeration. A tile fireplace in the main salon provides heat for cold month cruising.
She features a 4’3” full keel with retractable centerboard that increases her draft to 8’9”. Over the past few years, here sails and rigging have been updated and varnish renewed. Mechanical services have been completed and she is ready for her next owner.
Please call today to schedule your personal showing. Prelude is hull number 1455 in Hinckley Yacht’s sequence number. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to own a true yachting classic that will continue to impress and withstand the test of time.

OVERVIEW & HISTORY
Say “B-40” in any yacht club bar and everyone will know you’re referring to the William Tripp-designed Hinckley Bermuda 40, which may be the best known production sailboat ever made. It certainly has the distinction of having the longest production run for an auxillary sailboat in US boatbuilding history. Hinckley built (3) versions of the B40.
In 1972, the Mark III was introduced in which the mainmast was moved aft by 2 feet and its height was increased by another 4 feet 3 inches. The mainsail was given a higher aspect ratio and the overall sail area increased by 35 square feet.
To balance this, the ballast was increased by 1,000 pounds, immersing the hull an additional 2 inches and adding 1 foot to the waterline. These changes had the intended result of making the Mark III the best performer of the three versions.
Over more than three decades, from 1959 to 1992, Hinckley Yachts built 203 Bermuda 40’s. Prelude is Hull No 149 of the B40’s and Hull No 1455 of Hinckley Yachts.
