Description
For sale: 1980 44’ Alden 44’ Cutter, hull number 16 of 40. “Vi”
A design that turns heads every marina she goes to, this Alden 44 is looking for a new home. If you are looking for a comfortable cocktail cruiser, or a robust blue water vessel, make sure you come see "Vi" while she is still on the market.
In light conditions she handles like a dream, responding well to the helm in all points of sail. In offshore conditions her sure handling, dry decks, and stiff response to breeze is very comforting out of sight of land. "Vi" was first named "Gannet" after the largest North Atlantic seabird, and she still loves to represent her totem by flying through waves and storm conditions that would sideline most vessels of her size and class.
The interior is massive. An open style provides a walk through galley and head, while providing ample sleeping for six adults. Refreshed interior cushions and book cases throughout elevate the experience of any cruise.
In addition to her superb sailing characteristics and pedigree she also has a number of features that allow her to be sailed under a variety of conditions encountered in seas all over the world. Several that bear mention:
- A clubfoot boomed staysail that allows her to be sailed in very high winds single-handedly, allowing the captain to tack without adjusting any running rigging.
- A hydraulic helm-operated centerboard allows Vi to point remarkably high to windward while safely navigating shallow coastal waters 5 feet deep.
- The full skeg rudder has a one and a half inch pin, and the enclosed propeller sheds striking objects and tangling lines.
- The vessel is equipped with two anchors and a stout windlass.
- Two gangways and dodgers allow crew to safely access all mast and all running rigging in extreme conditions.
- Chart table and electronics are positioned facing aft where crew can easily communicate instrument data to the helm for timely decisions.
- The vessel has an offshore stove fueled by three propane burners with safety features. Propane line and solenoid need service.
- The Seafrost freezer works but the refrigerator needs service.
- Running hot and cold water are provided by an engine heater, and a 120VAC water heater, a demand pump and (2) 85 gallon freshwater tanks. One tank leaks under some conditions. May need replacement.
- The head and the holding tank are manual, highly reliable and functional. The main cabin dining table seats eight comfortably.
- There are eight bunks available for crew, and Vi sleeps six comfortably.
- Engine is a 2005 Westerbeke 55B diesel engine with velvet drive transmission, with new motor mounts, jack shaft and Max Prop. Engine hours ~1800.
- Sails are a high-performance set of North sails made from NPTour Ultra. The sails were commissioned by the CFO of North Sailmakers who owned the boat prior to the current owner.
- Vi has a complete set of spare sails, including staysail jib, mainsail, storm trysail, storm mainsail, spinnaker, as well as new offshore drogue.
