More Details
1981 Hatteras 48 Overview
Rubber Ducky offers twin Detroit Diesel 6v92 TA 435 HP main engines, Phasor 15 kW generator, Garmin electronics, AIS, two new anchors with chain and rode, three stateroom three head layout and a huge sundeck. Rubber Ducky is currently available to be seen by appointment in her home berth of Stuart, FL.
Rubber Ducky is decorated in a classic dark blue and yellow color scheme and offers: a full beam master stateroom aft with a centerline queen size berth and an ensuite head with a separate enclosed shower; a guest stateroom starboard aft with two single berths, one convertible to a desk, and a guest head to port; and a bunk stateroom forward with over/under single berths and an ensuite head which can be used for crew or as an additional guest stateroom. The headliners are all in good condition, as is the grass-cloth wallpaper, which are original to the vessel.
The bridge clearance on Rubber Ducky measured conservatively at 19’2” with the antennas down. The owner states the vessel can clear a 19’ bridge with the antennas down. With the navigational light down, Rubber Ducky measured conservatively at 17’10”, and thus is Great Loop capable.
1981 Hatteras 48 Walk-Through
The Hatteras 48’ ACMY can be boarded by an opening in the side rails on either side of the vessel, or via the ladder from the swim platform directly into the aft deck sundeck. From the hard top covered aft sundeck on Rubber Ducky, you can walk out either side deck to the foredeck, step up three molded-in steps to the flybridge or step down into the salon through the door to port. Once inside the salon the galley is port forward and the dinette is starboard forward. Further forward is the bunk stateroom with an ensuite head. Engine room access is via lift-u stairs from the galley-dinette to the salon.
Aft of the salon are steps down to a companionway with a guest stateroom to starboard, a guest head to port and the full beam master stateroom with ensuite head aft.
The headroom on Rubber Ducky: the salon is 6'7", the forward guest stateroom and ensuite head is 6’5”, the galley is 6’3” to 7’7”, the starboard guest stateroom is 6’4”, the port guest head is 6’2”, the master stateroom and master stateroom head is 6’3”, the sundeck is 6’5”, and the flybridge is 7’1”.
1981 Hatteras 48 Accommodations
Sundeck
The large sundeck on Rubber Ducky has a hardtop and non-skid deck. Its Strataglass enclosure has three opening U-shaped windows which clip to the hardtop. There is a transom door to port which leads to the fiberglass swim platform, accessible by a ladder. There is a teak and smoked Plexiglas wing door to each side deck, and molded-in steps to the flybridge. The teak door to port leads to the salon.
The wet bar is forward to starboard and was rebuilt in 2015. It features a dark blue Corian counter, a double door two-shelf upper cabinet, a stainless steel bowl sink with single lever faucet, a Danby 24” two door beverage/wine cooler, and a large lower storage cabinet. There is a stereo speaker and light over the bar. The wet bar was rebuilt in 2015.
Seating is provided on the aft deck by a large storage box with navy blue with white piping Sunbrella padded seat and back cushions, and two swivel/rocker chairs with custom Sunbrella cushions. A large custom coffee table features a map of the Bahamas. There are two ceiling fixtures. The Weber electric grill on a stand conveys with the vessel.
Flybridge
The flybridge on Rubber Ducky can be closed off from the aft deck by a teak and Plexiglas half-door with a sliding cover. It has an Atlantic Towers hardtop (03/2018) with three integrated lights and is fully enclosed; the enclosure does need to be replaced. There are also two lights in the radar arch.
The adjustable Pompanette captain seat is in front of the centered helm station, and has a convenient foot rest. A companion seat with a white vinyl padded seat and back cushion is to port. The L-shaped settee to starboard also has white vinyl padded seat and back cushions, with storage beneath. There is a large storage area under the helm, with double doors on either side. There is a cabinet with a DC panel to port.
Foredeck
The foredeck on Rubber Ducky is large enough to have three mounted deck boxes with seating cushions (two large to port and starboard) and one smaller one aft and still allow ample room to move about the non-skid deck. There are stainless steel rails with teak cap rails. The lifeline was replaced in April 2023.
There is also a hatch to the forward bunk room. A MarQuipt five step tide-rider stair is stored to starboard. The fresh water and electric hook-ups are on the sidewalk from the aft deck to starboard.
A windshield cover snaps on over the large windows. A dual trumpet horn is mounted on the brow.
Salon
Rubber Ducky’s salon is five carpeted steps down from the aft deck, through a teak door with a smoked Plexiglas window with pineapple decal. The sole is parquet, in good condition, and is protected by wall-to-wall carpet and padding in dark blue (2015). The owner had extra supports from the engine room installed to maintain the strength of the salon floor (2015). The headliner is in good condition. The sole has access panels for any major engine room work.
The salon offers an L-shaped neutral leatherette settee with a small coffee table to starboard, two low Telescope director chairs, and a neutral leatherette swiveling barrel chair. The director chairs can be used to provide additional aft deck seating if needed. The settee was recovered in 2015, and the rest of the chairs were new in 2015.
A custom cabinet was built around the Edge Star icemaker, to make an end table. The Edge Star automatic icemaker can produce 44 pounds of ice per day, and a separate water filter is in the engine room for the Edge Star and the galley freezer ice maker.
A Sony 49” LED Smart TV with a Sony sound bar is mounted on a motorized TV lift and hides away in a custom built cabinet forward to port.
Storage in the salon includes: under the settee cushions, in the cabinets at the bulkheads on both port and starboard sides, and in the bulkhead cabinets aft, which once housed the TV.
There is plenty of natural light in the salon from the screened opening windows on both sides which have Hunter Douglas silhouette shades (2015). There are three large covered windows forward.
The salon also features: the 110 volt panel to starboard, a mounted rack to starboard for cruising guides/magazines, a fire extinguisher, a control for the reverse cycle AC/heat, a Seth Thomas clock, a Seth Thomas weather station, two 12 volt ceiling lights, and two 110 volt dimmable ceiling lights.
Galley
The galley on Rubber Ducky, which is down from the salon to port forward, was completely rebuilt in 2015. It features a beautiful teak and holly sole. The neutral Corian counter and wide backsplash coordinate with the subway tile walls. There are two convenient GFI electrical outlets at the counter level for small kitchen appliances.
There is storage available in the four small drawers, the large cutlery drawer, the six upper cabinets, the double door two-shelf cabinet under the sink, the large cabinet next to the oven which is large enough for a trash receptacle, and the in-counter storage compartment.
The stainless steel sink is mounted under the counter and features a single lever faucet with pull-down sprayer. Lighting is provided by one ceiling light and LED tube lights under all of the hanging cabinets which provide great workspace illumination.
The galley appliances include: a 24” Wolf 3 burner induction cooktop, a 27” 1.4cf KitchenAid microwave/convection oven with a broiler element, and a Samsung 17.5cf three door French door refrigerator/freezer with ice maker (08/2023).
The steps from the salon to the galley raise to provide engine room access.
Dinette
The dinette on Rubber Ducky is across from the galley, to starboard, one step up. It features two dark blue vinyl tufted cushioned banquettes, which can be easily removed to access the storage compartments beneath them. There are also two storage drawers in the step from the galley sole.
The forward bulkhead is mirrored, which reflects the natural light from the portlight over the table. The table was replaced in 2015. There is an attractive ceiling fixture over the table, as well as a convenient GFI electrical outlet at the table height.
The entire dinette converts to an additional berth with the back cushions filling in over the tabletop once it is dropped down.
The DC electrical panel is accessible from the dinette, and features a light for convenience.
Companionway
The companionway is several steps down from the salon aft. A stacked washer/dryer is to starboard in a cabinet, but is non-operational. There are some small storage cabinets, a ceiling light, a CO detector, and grass-cloth wallpaper walls.
Master Stateroom
Rubber Ducky’s full beam master stateroom aft offers a centerline queen size berth with custom decorator bedding, a mirrored bulkhead, and a carpeted sole. The fresh water tank and access to the rudders are under the master berth. There are two curtained portlights on either side of the stateroom, as well as a curtained transom hatch.
Storage is available in the drawers in both nightstands, the six large drawers to port, the four large drawers and two small drawers to starboard, and the lighted hanging locker to starboard. There are two custom three-switch 12volt reading lights, three ceiling lights, 110 volt electrical outlets at the nightstands, and a wall-mounted Samsung 50” Smart TV across from the berth.
The master stateroom also features two mirrored stereo speakers on the mirrored bulkhead, a control for the reverse cycle AC/heat, a fire extinguisher, and a two panel door with a full length mirror. The ensuite master head is to port.
Master Head
All of the heads on Rubber Ducky were redone in 2015 with neutral Corian countertops with integrated sinks, and Raritan electric heads. All of the single-lever faucets were replaced with brushed nickel at the same time.
The master head also features: vinyl flooring, grass-cloth wallpaper, a portlight with frosted cover, a three section mirror with storage, storage under the vanity, a towel ring, a towel bar, a fan, a GFI 110 volt electrical outlet, a ceiling light, and a large light over the vanity.
The separate stall shower features: a tempered glass door, an integral seat, a light, a removable shower head, a towel bar, and a Half Mack retractable clothesline string.
Mid Guest Stateroom
The aft guestroom is to starboard on Rubber Ducky and was customized in 2015 to convert to a desk/workspace, but easily converts to two offset bunks. The sole is carpeted. The upper bunk at the starboard bulkhead is over five storage drawers, and below a curtained portlight. The lower bunk is aft and converts to a work desk. The mattress and matching bedding convey with the vessel, and are easily stored in the stateroom. There is a reading light at each bunk, as well as a ceiling light.
The guest stateroom has its own AC unit with control, but it is non-operational. A large lighted full length hanging locker is forward, and there is a full length mirror on the back of the companionway door.

The aft guest head is to port, across from the guest stateroom, and is a wet head. All of the heads on Rubber Ducky were redone in 2015 with neutral Corian countertops with integrated sinks, and Raritan electric heads. A shelf is to port over two sliding doors cabinets, as well as two drawers and a cabinet. There are two portlights with frosted covers as well as a large screened hatch.
