Description
Frequent Flyer's first owner raced her to Hawaii in 1987, and her second owner raced her locally in the SF Bay Express37 fleet. Her current owner bought her in 2017, and since then she has been living an easy life as a cruising yacht. She has sailed out of Berkeley with family and friends on weekends, overnights at Ayala Cove, and the occasional Friday Night race sponsored by BYC. She is a 37 foot boat with a tiller, which gives the driver immediate tactile feedback, and turns on a dime.
Frequent Flyer has deep Bay Area provenance. The concept for the Express 37 was developed in 1984 by Carl Schumacher and built by the Alsberg Brothers Boatworks in Santa Cruz. Schumacher's objective was to design a boat that would excel on long ocean races, that was easy and safe to sail short-handed, and would have at least 6′ of standing headroom. Sixty-five boats were built in Santa Cruz, and Frequent Flyer is hull number 55. Frequent Flyer has a Ballenger “masthead-fractional” mast and boom, and a spade rudder made by Water Rat. Her Nitronic solid rod rigging was replaced by Easom Rigging in 2016. Easom also serviced the Navtec hydraulic system for the backstay and installed a new hydraulic vang. Frequent Flyer is well suited for the windy conditions of San Francisco Bay.
Her current owner installed all new Raymarine electronics in 2018, including a chart plotter with Navionics, an MFD display unit, VHF/GPS/AID radio, new CoAX cabling in the mast, and new wind and DST sensors. The owner also purchased a stack pack, and upgraded the cabin lights to LED. A diver cleans the bottom and replaces zinc every two months. The Yanmar 3GMF30 engine was tuned-up in June of 2024 at the Berkeley Marine Center. She is ready to provide rewarding sailing experiences to a new owner. Call today to check her out.

Sails & Rigging
Standing Rigging: Ballenger mast and boom are original to boat. Mast is keel stepped. In 2016 the standing rigging was replaced by Easom Rigging, including new Nitronic solid rod rigging. Easom also serviced the Navtech hydraulic system that drives the backstay and vang. A spinnaker pole is mounted on deck. Sails: The Dacron Main with partial battens was made by North Sails in 1994. The #3 jib, made of Norlam in 2009, is mounted on roller furling. A 130% Genoa is included, along with symmetrical spinnaker. All the sails were repaired by Pineapple Sails. A new stack pack was installed recently by the owner.
Accommodations
Boat has 2 berths, V-berth and open berth in the read of cabin, and pipe berths that can sleep up to 6 crew. The head is a a Groco, manual flush, Type III marine sanitation device, with a 10 gallon plastic holding tank, and a diverter valve. All cabin lights have been replaced by the owner with new LED units.
Electronics
In 2018, Reliable Electronics installed new Raymarine chart plotter, Axiom9 instrument pack, including MultiFunction display with Navionics, and Ray70 VHF radio with GPS and AIS receiver. The i70 Instrument pack was installed with color instruments, wind and DST transducers, and a new backbone of RG8X CoAX cable in the mast. The DC electrical system is powered via two 12-volt AGM batteries, which are routed through a Perko battery switch, and the DC distribution panelboard. The two batteries are AGM. The Battery Charger is a Protect 1220i.
Deck and Hull
Frequent Flyer's gel-coat deck maintains its original gloss. The exterior teak trim is well maintained with high gloss varnish. The deck layout consists of a self-bailing cockpit, aft, side, and fore decks with a slight crown, and a raised cabin. The structures are constructed with alternating layers of molded fiberglass, with end-grain Balsa core in places for reinforcements. The Ballenger mast is aluminum black anodized, double spreader, keel stepped, and the boom, also made by Ballenger, is aluminum black anodized, with end boom-sheeting. There are 7 Barient winches in the cockpit: two #27 two-speed self-tailing secondary winches, two #28 two-speed primary winches, and three #21 two-speed self-tailing winches on the cabin-top. The hull was constructed with alternating layers of molded fiberglass, with suspected closed cell foam core in places for reinforcements. The topsides are slightly rounded aft, and flared forward, with a raked bow, and a reverse transom. There is an externally bolted-lead fin keel, and a custom carbon fiber spade rudder, made by Water Rat. The shaft is 1” Stainless steel Aquamet 22 alloy, and it turns a Martec two-bladed folding propeller. The packing gland is a PYI-PSS Dripless Seal. The Through hulls are plastic connected to Forespar Marelon inline ball valves. There is a 12 pound Danforth anchor with three-strand nylon 3/8” x 75’ rode.
Engine
The Yanmar 3GM30F is original to the boat, and well maintained. A tune-up was done in June of 2024 at Berkely Marine Center, replacing oil, filters, belts and some hoses. The engine has 1088 hours. It starts up easily and sounds smooth. The fuel system consists of an aluminum fuel tank, and USCG Type A & A1 neoprene flexible fuel hose, routed through a Racor fuel filter and water separator. The raw water exhaust system is well routed. The mixing elbow was replaced with a new aluminum elbow.
Galley
The stove is a two-burner GSI with an oven, fueled by CNG. The owner has 2 CHG tanks that he refills at Blue Pelican. The refrigerator is a Nova-Kool M/N LT200 air-cooled, 12-volt unit. The house water pressure system consists of two plastic tanks and a Shurflo house water pressure pump, all routed through plastic waterlines.
