Owner's Description
"This high-quality Bluewater boat is a well cared for example of the original Deck Saloon Oyster Yachts designed by renowned Naval Architects Holman & Pye. This 1987 Oyster 46 was purchased by the current owner from the Oyster Yard Ipswich England in 1995. She has been in the fresh water of Lake Michigan and stored heated since 2003. This boat is constructed with single skin GRTP supported by massive ribs and stringers. The center cockpit has a queen berth in the master suite, a bunk room and v-berth along with two heads each with separate shower spaces. The boat is cutter rigged with an encapsulated keel and skeg rudder.
This Oyster 46 deck saloon is perhaps the best-preserved early Oyster 46 existing. She shows as a much younger boat. The teak decks were removed and thousands of screw holes filled by Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay WI in 2003. Then Palmer Johnson attached about 12 sheets of marine plywood with teak decking on top to the waterproofed deck using mostly glue duplicating the original teak deck. This refurbishment greatly lowered the typical water ingress risk of many teak decks while retaining the anti-skid and desirable appearance. The mainsail new in 2022 from Mack Sails has less than a handful of hours of use. Mack Sails also provided the genny sail about 10 years ago. The Genny has also seen few hours of use, though it is 8-10 years old.
This Oyster 46 is hull #21 of 25 constructed between 1981 and 1990. These boats were created for Blue Water comfort and safety. The ability to keep watch from indoors is priceless. Which explains the proliferation of deck saloon styled Oysters and other makes in subsequent years that copied this original design.
This Yacht was purchased by the current owner in 1995 at the Oyster Yards in Ipswich England and that owner sailed her across the Atlantic in 1996. This Yacht covers 150 miles in a typical day. She was then enjoyed in the Caribbean, US Gulf Coast and US East Coast until trucked to Lake Michigan in 2003 where infrequent day sails became the norm. Having seen little use in the past 8 years or so (sadly not launched at all in two of those years). It is time for this boat to find new owners.
The 82 hp Perkins 4236 is original and runs well."
