Description
The Nordhavn 35 was designed for two companionable adventurers who are comfortable with a one-stateroom yacht. She is a coastal pilot cruiser with unquestionable NORDHAVN ocean going pedigree. At 36 feet and 13 feet beam, she has the style, the heft, the outfitting and attributes of much larger yachts.
There is little room for improvement in the attention to detail from the top-of-the-mast searchlight, auto adjustment of the shower water, dual bilge pumps, and the Ultra anchor. The cushioned helm seat fits two comfortably with almost 360 degree visibility
The lasting impressions are the warmth of teak, comfort, detailed craftsmanship, simplicity, attention to detail, and robust construction. Encore delivers on the promise to cruise with confidence and style.

PROMISES KEPT
The 1999 N35 Design Brief (quoted in it’s entirety below) serves also as a description of the N35s that are admired today. The Design Brief surpasses the most eloquent of broker listings and echos the experiences of owners over the years.
P.A.E. Nordhavn 35 Coastal Pilot Design Brief. Revised October 22, 1999.
Pacific Asian Enterprises, builders of the world renowned MASON sailboats, and NORDHAVN power yachts is proud to introduce the Nordhavn 35 Coastal Pilot, the first model in a planed series of semi-displacement power cruisers. Drawing from the ocean crossing heritage of our long range Nordhavns, the Coastal Pilot yachts are intended for shorter excursions along coastal waters and will be lighter and faster. The Nordhavn 35 is the first model available and
she is a genuine all-weather coastal cruiser ideally suited for an active couple seeking adventure. She is designed for limited offshore work and will travel safely and in comfort to such demanding cruising grounds as the Inland Passage to Alaska, the Northeastern United States, the remote areas of the Great Lakes, Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, the Bahamas, the Eastern Caribbean and beyond.
While not designed to cross oceans, the Nordhavn 35 Coastal Pilot is intended to be one of the most capable mini-yachts ever produced for pleasure use. Our research concluded that 35 feet is the smallest practical size to safely, comfortably and economically deliver two people across the water, away from civilization, with all the necessities they would require for weeks at a time. Our uncompromised building techniques, incorporating heavy construction *scantlings, commercial grade marine windows, and use of the finest marine hardware, ensure the 35 will be solid, rugged, and ready for the toughest sea conditions that you will encounter.
Extensive tank testing has helped us develop the optimum characteristics for this new breed of coastal cruiser. The hull form presents a soft-v entry with a deep forefoot that transitions into a full-length keel. A massive bronze carrier supports the rudder and creates an aperture for the propeller, protecting the steering and running gear in the event of an unintentional grounding. Additionally, this underwater configuration provides outstanding directional stability and enhances maneuverability. The 35’s beam is carried well aft. She is full bodied at the waterline, which coupled with her round bilges and soft chines, helps to minimize rolling. The aft section of the under body has a designed-in “wedge” that keeps the trim angle down as speeds increase, acting essentially as self-regulating trim tabs. She will steer as if on rails. Her motion will be soft and comfortable.
The 350 hp Yanmar single diesel engine will push her along comfortably at 12 to 13 knots with fuel consumption estimated at 12 to 13 gallons per hour. Our predictions show the Nordhavn Coastal Pilot will have a top speed of approximately 15 knots. With 480 gallons of fuel aboard, she can sustain a 13 knot pace for 33 hours and log 440 miles. Slowing down to a more modest speed of 7 knots will allow her range to quadruple, achieving approximately 1950 miles in 278 hours for longer passages when necessary. The engine room will be maintenance friendly with excellent access to machinery. Silent running is essential to yachts planning extended range cruising and every effort will be made to minimize noise and vibration.
The Nordhavn 35’s general configuration is wheelhouse aft with a low profile, low center of gravity and an uncluttered deck. All of the heavy weights in this boat are purposely positioned to give her a low center of gravity that will improve stability and dampen rolling without requiring additional ballast. The hull is hand laid fiberglass mat and woven roving with an end grain balsa sandwich above the waterline. The deck is also laid up with balsa core and has plywood situated in areas of high compression load. The cabin sides are corded with Klegecell for stiffness and weight savings. Fully loaded, she’ll displace 25,000 pounds and draw 3‘6“.

PROMISES KEPT CONTINUED
The Nordhavn 35’s luxurious split-level interior accommodations feature a spacious state room with a “home-sized” island berth and a comfy seat forward. The head, with enclosed shower stall, is centrally located for easy access and maximum privacy. The galley is complete with appliances you should expect (refrigerator/freezer, stove with oven and broiler, microwave, oven, etc.) and is comparable in size to our larger Nordhavns. The upper level pilothouse combines the salon and steering station, creating a convivial social center for relaxing, dining and running the ships operations. Visibility from the steering station is outstanding and having the wheelhouse aft makes for a dryer ride and gentler motion underway. The necessary hull volume for long-term comfort was an important design criterion that allowed us to achieve desirable living spaces and abundant storage throughout.
The exquisite teak hardwood joiner work, exemplifies true craftsmanship, and is lavishly varnished. Dovetailed drawers and precision fit locker doors with concealed hinges highlight the first-rate carpentry. Formica bulkhead with teak trim in the master state room, head, shower, and galley and instill an open airy ambiance. The salon features distinctive teak furniture, highlighted by the rich dinette table and plush sofa, which converts to a slide-out double birth for a guest. The Helm station with it’s teak bench seat for two and striking black laminate for nav/com electronics is ready for serious action. And seemingly little things like Corian sink counters and vinyl flooring in the head and galley for easy cleaning, show no detail is too small to overlook.
With an overall height from keel to cabin top of less than 13‘6“, she also boasts an unexpected surprise: she can be cost-effectively moved overland so a summer cruise to Glacier Bay Alaska can be followed by a winter spent exploring the Bahamas. Nordhavn 35 Coastal Pilot offers a fresh new choice to enthusiastic boaters, with or without power cruising experience. She will also appeal to the seasoned yachtsman who has owned and managed larger yachts. Her big boat features and capabilities make her an ideal and economical alternative to the financial commitment of maintaining a larger vessel.
Sellers Note: ”The design notes accurately describe what we cruise in today….except for one exception attributable to “uncompromised building techniques, heavy construction scantlings, commercial grade finest marine hardware, solid, rugged, and ready for the toughest sea conditions.” Add to that ample tankage and storage capacity and you have a boat that welcomes the trade-off of range, quality and comfort over planing and speed.
In my experience, the Encore cruises most happily at 1700 to 1800 rpm, achieving 8+ mph and consuming about 2.5 GPH.
